Isabel illustrates what life might have been like in the 13th century at a Beguine convent in Ghent. These were enclosed communities consisting of adjoining buildings and protected by high walls and sometimes even moats. This architectural design ensured privacy and was intended to keep intruders out. For Afar magazine.
