Drones are the only male ants and appear exclusively in the spring during the mating season. Their sole purpose in life is to mate with the young queens during the swarm flight. They do not participate in the social life of the nest. Since they cannot feed themselves, they rely on the workers to provide them with food in the run-up to the mating season. Drones live for only a few weeks. Once they have fulfilled their task, they are expelled from the nest and die.
